Part 1: When to Use iPhoto Plus 4

iPhoto Plus 4 is an image editing program ideal for scanning photographs, or making copies of documents. Scanned images can be saved, printed, or incorporated with iPhoto Plus 4’s templates to create cards, calendars and other unique projects.

Part 2: A Sample Scan with iPhoto Plus 4

  1. Start iPhoto Plus 4 by clicking on its icon located in the iPhoto Plus 4 program group.
  2. iPhoto Plus 4 will open with a set of icons along the left-hand side and across the top of the screen. While most of the functions of the program can be performed either with the icons or the traditional pull-down menus, this tutorial will concentrate on using the program with the menus. Employing the icons will be easier once the menus are understood, and the icons are detailed in the CD tours that come with iPhoto Plus 4.
  3. Click on File and select Acquire. The Acquire menu will appear with the choice of Image or Select Source. (Image may be grayed out if this is the first time using iPhoto Plus 4.) Click on Select Source.
  4. The Select Source dialog box appears. There will be a pull down menu in the center of the Select Source box where the TWAIN sources are displayed. Click on the down arrow and the click the name of the TWAIN source for the scanner being used then click the OK button. The Select Source box disappears.
  5. Click on File and Acquire again. This time, select Image from the Acquire menu. The Acquire Image dialog box will appear.

Make sure the radio button in front of New Image is selected and click the Acquire button at the bottom of the Acquire Image dialog box.
  6. Open the lid of the scanner and insert the item to be scanned. It should be placed face down on the glass, lined up with the right-hand corner of the bed.
  7. Close the lid of the scanner and click the Prescan button on the Scanner Settings screen. The scanner will make a pass and display a preview version of the image in the preview window.
  8. Along with the preview image, the preview window will also contain a dotted line box known as the crop frame. The crop frame determines what exactly will be scanned, and only those items within the frame will be scanned.
  9. Most of the scanner drivers will adjust the crop frame to the edges of the image, but it can be adjusted further simply by placing the mouse cursor on the edge of the frame until the cursor becomes a double-ended arrow. Once the cursor has the two ends, click and hold down the mouse button and drag the side of the frame up/down or left/right until it lines up with the edge of the image. Repeat this until all four sides of the frame are lined up with the edges of the image.
  10. Click the Scan Mode button on the scanner settings window and choose a setting:
  • Color is for color images from photographs, books, or magazines.
  • Gray is for black and white photographs, for color items made to look black and white, or for drawings and patterns employing shading and texture.
  • Line Art is for black and white text or drawings that have no shading or texture. They are pure black or white.
  1. Click the Resolution button on the Scanner Settings window and choose a resolution in dots per inch (dpi) for this scan. Some resolution tips:
  • Color images should be scanned at 72-100 dpi for the majority of general uses such as wallpaper, e-mail and web pages. For high-quality printing, they can be scanned at 150-250 dpi.
  • Gray images should be scanned at 72-100 dpi for uses such as wallpaper, e-mail and web pages. They can be scanned at 150-300 dpi for most high quality printing, and in some cases the dpi can be as high as the maximum grayscale resolution of the printer, usually around 600 dpi.
  • Line Art images should be scanned at 300 dpi for sharp reproductions of drawings and text documents.
  1. With the scan settings selected, click the Scan button. The scanner will now scan the image into the iPhoto Plus 4 program.
  2. Once the scanner has completed its scan, click the Close or Exit button on the TWAIN interface. As the TWAIN interface closes, the completed scan will be shown in the center of the iPhoto Plus 4 screen with the heading "Untitled."
  3. This finished image can now be printed, re-sized, saved or made into something creative like a card or calendar page.

Part 3: Taking the Tours and Viewing the Screenbook

Once an image is scanned, image editing programs such as iPhoto Plus 4 can be used to manipulate the image. The Adjust and Enhance icons in iPhoto Plus 4 provide options for fixing an image, such as straightening it, or applying effects to an image. iPhoto Plus 4 provides several different ways to learn about the Adjust and Enhance icons. Along with the Ulead iPhoto Plus 4 Help found under the Help menu, the program also has two tours and a screenbook, which illustrates the use of the different icons.

Taking the iPhoto Plus Tours

  1. Place the CD that installed iPhoto Plus 4 into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM has AutoRun engaged, choose Cancel before the installation begins, and then click Yes if prompted to end or abort the installation.
  2. Click on Start and select Programs. Under Programs, locate the iPhoto Plus 4 program group. There are two tours to choose from: the iPhoto Plus 4 Tour, which gives a general overview of the program; or the Photo Capture tour, which gives tips for using a scanner or digital camera to bring images into iPhoto Plus 4.
  3. Click on the icon for the desired tour. Follow the prompts during the tour to move from topic to topic.

Viewing the Screenbook

  1. Place the CD that installed iPhoto Plus 4 into the CD-ROM drive. If the CD-ROM has AutoRun engaged, choose Cancel before the installation begins, and then click Yes if prompted to end or abort the installation.
  2. Click on Start and select Find. Choose Files or Folders from the window of Find options.
  3. In the Find window, type ipeguide.pdf into the first line called Named.
  4. On the line that reads Look In, use the down arrow to see the list of drives and choose the letter/icon that represents the CD-ROM drive.
  5. Make sure the Include Subfolders box is checked and click Find Now.
  6. The Find window will now display the items found called ipeguide.pdf (this is the filename for the Screenbook). Note: Some of the scanner CDs contain multiple versions of iPhoto Plus 4 and the Screenbook in different languages. If the search reveals multiple copies of the Screenbook file, choose the one located in the IPP4.ENG folder. This is the English language version.
  7. Double-click on the Screenbook file (ipeguide.pdf) to start it. Follow the on-screen prompts within the Screenbook to move from topic to topic.
