Safe Mode

A Windows 95/98 start-up option that loads the system with the minimum number of drivers and information Windows needs to run.

Save As

1. Common command in programs for saving a file with a new filename. 2. Name of the dialog box where save options appear.

Scale

Command in Color It! imaging program used to change the actual size of an image for printing. See resample, re-size, size and zoom.

Scan

1. In computers, to digitally capture or examine an image via a light-sensitive device. 2. Command button in a scanner interface for scanning.

Scan Dialog Box

Program included with many Mustek scanners that allows for basic scanning operations in a few simple steps. The Scan Dialog Box has settings for images, fax, OCR and e-mail, and is activated either by an icon or opening the scanner lid.

Scan Mode

In a scanner interface, the type of scan to be made such as color, grayscale or line art.

Scan Progress Indicator

Part of a scanner, which lets the user, know that the scanner is functioning. Some scanners use a transparent, green plastic strip along the edge of the document cover which allows light from the lamp to shine through and show the progress of the scan. Other scanners have a green LED in the front of the bed that blinks as the scanner is operating.

Scan Window

The glass or transparent plastic surface of a flatbed scanner where the document or image is placed face down. The carriage with the lamp, mirrors or CIS travels underneath the scan window to capture the image. The scan window is generally cut to a specific document size, such as letter (8.5" x 11").

Scanner

1. Electronic device that digitally captures or examines images via a light-sensitive component. 2. General term referring to any scanning device. See drum scanner, flatbed scanner, handheld scanner and sheetfed scanner.

Scanner Bed

The metal or plastic chassis containing the internal components of a flatbed scanner.

Scanner Interface

The pop-up window for the TWAIN driver or plug-in driver that allows the user to choose the various settings for a scan. The scanner interface has the Scan and Prescan buttons, the scan mode settings and the preview window.

Scitex CT

Graphic file format in the Color It! Macintosh imaging program for grayscale and CMYK images.

SCSI

Acronym for Small Computer System Interface. Pronounced "scuzzy," SCSI is an industry standard for high-speed connection of devices such as hard drives, CD-ROMs and scanners. SCSI interfaces can be built-in to a motherboard or installed as a separate expansion card.

SCSI Cable

A high-quality cable designed for SCSI devices, which require strong, uninterrupted signals. SCSI cables come in many different styles, including 25-pin connectors. See 25-pin connector, 50-pin Centronics connector and 50-pin High-Density (SCSI-2) connector.

SCSI Chain

Group of SCSI peripherals connected to the same SCSI controller. The devices are linked together by cables, one after the other like the links of a chain.

SCSI ID

Unique identification of a SCSI device in a SCSI chain. Depending on the type of SCSI controller, most devices will be identified with a number from zero to seven.

Secondary Color

Color achieved when two primary colors are mixed in equal parts, typically seen as cyan, yellow and magenta. Red plus green equals yellow, green plus blue equals cyan and blue plus red equals magenta.

Select Source

Command in imaging programs that allows the user to select the TWAIN driver for the scanner or digital camera they are going to use.

Shadows

Darkest areas of an image.

Sharpen

Filter or effect used in imaging programs to enhance the edge of images by increasing the contrast of the pixels closest to the edges.

Sheetfed Scanner

Scanning device where documents are pulled across the scanning array by an electric roller. Multiple pages can be placed in a tray above the roller and will be pulled through one at a time.

Simple Text

Basic word processing program featured with the Macintosh OS.

SMTP

Acronym for Simple Mail Transfer Protocol. Internet protocol that routes e-mail from one network to another.

Software Interpolation

Adding of pixels to an image to increase resolution. Occurs when scanning items at resolutions higher than the optical capabilities of the scanning device. See interpolation.

Special Menu

One of the options on the top menu bar of the Macintosh desktop. The Special menu has commands for emptying the Trash and shutting down the Macintosh.

Spell Checking

1. In a word processing program, a function that compares words in a document to known words in an on-line dictionary. 2. In an OCR program, a method of character recognition that uses the recognized letters in a word, compared against an on-line dictionary, to fill in missing letters. Start Button

Button on the Windows 95/98 desktop located on the left-hand side of the taskbar. The Start button activates the Start menu. See taskbar.

Start Menu

In Windows 95/98, a menu activated by the Start button from the desktop taskbar. The Start menu contains often used applications such as Find and Help, and has cascading windows for the various program groups and program icons. See taskbar.

StartupScreen

A graphic file format in the Color It! Macintosh imaging program, which makes images that, may be used as start-up images on a Macintosh.

Storage Devices

In a computer system, the fixed or removable media for saving data, such as hard drives, floppy drives or Zip drives.

Sub-scanning Rail Shafts

In a flatbed scanner, the metal or plastic guide rails that the carriage moves along as it makes a pass.

Subtractive Primaries

Cyan, magenta and yellow used in color printing. Like red, green and blue, CMY can be mixed to create other colors, but they are darker and more limited than RGB.

SVGA

Acronym for Super Video Graphics Array. A high-resolution graphics display for a PC.

System Folder

In a Macintosh, the main folder where the start-up commands and operating system are stored.

System Tray

Located on the right-hand side of the taskbar, the system tray contains the time and system icons, such as volume control, display settings or Direct Scan. See taskbar.
