In a GUI, an option with a
circular button that is either depressed or filled in with
the click of a mouse to indicate that a particular selection
has been made.

RAM
|
Acronym for Random
Access Memory. 1. Semiconductor chips in a
computer where information can be stored and accessed in any
order. Stored memory is held as long as the system has
power, or until the application requiring the storage is
shut down. 2. General term used to describe the amount of
memory of a computer system.

RAS
|
Short for Sun Rasterfile.
Graphic file format compatible with Sun Microsystems
UNIX-based computers. Files saved in this format have
".ras" as a file extension.

Raster
|
A grid pattern used to create
bitmap images.
|
|
Recycle Bin
|
1. In Windows, an icon on the
desktop where unwanted files are placed to be deleted. 2.
Specialized folder in Windows that keeps files marked for
deletion until they are either restored into the system, or
deleted when the Recycle Bin is "emptied." See Trash.

Resample
|
Command in iPhoto Plus 1.2
imaging program used to change the actual size of an image
for printing. See re-size, scale, size and
zoom.

Re-size
|
In imaging programs, to
permanently, or temporarily change the physical size of an
image so that is printed or displayed larger or smaller than
it was originally scanned or captured. See resample, scale,
size and zoom.

Resolution
|
The clarity of an image on a
computer display or print out generally measured in dots per
inch. The more dpi, the more detailed the image.
|
|
Retouching
|
Use of an imaging program to
clean up flaws in an image. See photo manipulation.
|
|
RGB
|
Acronym for Red,
Green and Blue. 1. The versatile
"True Color" profile, which can create any of the
billions of possible, colors simply by mixing various
amounts and tones of the primary colors red, green and blue.
2. General term for a device that uses True Color, such as
RGB monitor. See additive primaries and true color.

Ribbon Cable
|
Computer connection cable
with wide, flat insulation instead of round insulation.
Ribbon cable is very flexible and can fit into areas with
little space or with moving parts that may snag on
conventional round cables. Scanners use ribbon cables to
connect the circuit board to the carriage.

RTF
|
Acronym for Rich
Text Format. A capacity of some document
file formats that can retain the formatting (italics,
underlines, etc.) of a document between different programs
or computer platforms.
